Over 500 residents of Kachere Township, including single mothers and school dropouts, have received training in various handcraft and product-making skills through a local organisation called Friends in Development.
Speaking during the certificate presentation ceremony held at St. Kizito Primary School in Blantyre, the organisation’s leader, Theothilus Josephy, said their goal is to help improve the lives of people who were unable to continue with formal education by equipping them with income-generating skills.
Josephy explained that the organisation decided to introduce the initiative after observing the numerous challenges faced by people in the area, which in some cases led to hopelessness and even suicidal thoughts.
One of the beneficiaries, Mary Ndege, expressed gratitude for the training, saying it has transformed her financially and given her hope.
“I thank God because this organisation has helped me learn how to make soap, which is now supporting my livelihood and enabling me to take care of my grandchildren,” said Ndege.
In his remarks, Eric Mofolo, Councillor for the Mapanga–Mzedi Ward and guest of honour at the event, commended the initiative, saying the acquired skills will positively impact many households in the community.
A total of 500 participants trained under Friends in Development for over two months, learning how to make various products such as soap, pizza, cakes, peanut butter, mahewu, juice, scones, fritters, and samosas, among others.
