Acting Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Hilary Chilomba, has fully repaid the K113.7 million loan he obtained under the government’s Mega Farm project, official documents have revealed.
The Mega Farm project, a flagship government initiative implemented through the Ministry of Agriculture’s Mega Farm Support Unit in partnership with the Malawi Agriculture and Industrial Corporation (MAIIC), was established to promote large-scale farming and improve national food security.
Since Monday, social media has been flooded with leaked documents purportedly showing the list of beneficiaries who accessed loans through the project. Chilomba’s name appeared on the list, sparking online discussions and speculation about his loan status.
However, verified documentation seen by Sele Media Malawi indicates that Chilomba’s loan has been fully settled. The records show that he initially obtained farm inputs valued at K105.8 million including 800 bags of fertiliser (Urea and NPK) worth K83.2 million, maize seed worth K16 million.and pesticides and chemicals amounting to K6.6 million. By June 2025, interest charges had brought the total repayment figure to K113.7 million.
According to the documents, Chilomba repaid the loan through maize deliveries to the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA). Between August 1 and August 29, 2025, he supplied a total of 117,820 kilograms of maize, which was accepted as full settlement of the loan.
In a letter dated August 20, 2025, MAIIC’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Lloyd Banda, confirmed receipt of the full payment. The letter reads in part:
“We are pleased to confirm that MAIIC has received the full value of the maize delivered (totalling 117,820 kilograms) and that the corresponding proceeds have been applied towards the full settlement of your outstanding loan balance. Accordingly, your loan account is now fully cleared and closed, with no further obligations on your part under this facility.”
Speaking in an interview, Chilomba expressed concern over what he termed “continued misinformation” circulating on social media regarding the loan. “Some people are just trying to dent my image and score political mileage,” he said, emphasizing that he had met all his obligations in accordance with the agreement.
The clarification is expected to ease public speculation surrounding the Mega Farm loan lists that have recently gone viral. It also reinforces calls for verified information to guide public discourse on government supported development projects.
