The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), led by President Peter Mutharika, has officially named Blantyre City South East legislator, Sameer Suleman, as its candidate for the position of Speaker of the National Assembly ahead of the crucial elections slated for 29 October 2025.
In a statement released by the party’s Secretary General, Peter Mukhito, the DPP said the decision followed thorough consultations within the party’s leadership structures. Mukhito emphasized that Suleman’s nomination reflects the DPP’s confidence in his leadership qualities, parliamentary experience, and commitment to promoting professionalism and unity in the House.
“The party believes Honourable Suleman has the capacity to preside over the affairs of Parliament with impartiality, fairness, and respect for democratic principles,” the statement reads in part.
Suleman, a seasoned politician known for his bold and outspoken nature, currently serves as the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture. His nomination is seen as part of the DPP’s broader strategy to strengthen its influence in the legislature as it prepares for the 2025 general elections.
Meanwhile, political analysts have described the development as a strategic move aimed at consolidating the party’s support base in the southern region while positioning key loyalists in influential roles ahead of the next political cycle.
The speakership race is expected to be tightly contested, with other political parties also expected to unveil their candidates in the coming days.
If elected, Suleman will replace the outgoing Speaker whose term comes to an end this October.
The DPP, which has been rebuilding its political structures following the 2020 electoral loss, says the move symbolizes its commitment to strong parliamentary oversight and effective governance.
As the countdown to October 29 continues, all eyes will be on Parliament to see how the balance of power and alliances shape the outcome of the Speakership election.
