The European Union (EU) has today donated assorted equipment worth 287,000 euros (about K600 million) to eight Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Malawi.
The items were previously used by the EU Election Observation Mission during the September 16 general elections.
The beneficiary CSOs include the Centre for Human Rights, Education, Advice and Assistance (CHREAA), the Media Council of Malawi, Youth Net and Counselling (YONECO), the Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi (APAM), There Is Hope Malawi, Malawi Children’s Village, Emerge Livelihoods, and Focus Malawi.
The donation package features laptop computers, printers, smartphones, and office furniture — all procured locally to support the country’s economy.
EU Ambassador to Malawi Daniel Aristi-Gaztelumendi said the support is part of the EU’s ongoing commitment to strengthen Malawi’s civil society and promote sustainable development.
“We are confident that this equipment will enhance the capacity of these organizations to continue making meaningful contributions to Malawi’s democratic and social growth,” he said.
YONECO Executive Director MacBain Mkandawire described the donation as timely, noting that most CSOs struggle with limited resources to carry out their work effectively.
“This donation will go a long way in improving our operations and ensuring we continue reaching communities that need our support the most,” Mkandawire said.
On his part, APAM President Young Muhamba expressed gratitude to the EU, saying the equipment will improve the organization’s record-keeping and help it serve persons with albinism more efficiently.
“We appreciate this gesture. It will make a real difference in how we organize and deliver our services,” Muhamba added.
