
BLANTYRE, Malawi – The Scorchers are back in camp with renewed fire and ambition as Head Coach Lovemero Fazili has unveiled a 32-member provisional squad to kick-start preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers against Angola.
Training begins on October 15, with 24 home-based players expected to assemble in Blantyre before being joined by 8 foreign-based stars directly in Angola.
Speaking with conviction and optimism, Fazili said his side is determined to make history for Malawi women’s football.
“We have assembled a balanced squad with a mix of experience and new energy. Our focus is to prepare well and make sure Malawi books a ticket to the next WAFCON,”
Coach Lovemero Fazili explained.
The Scorchers will face Angola in the first leg on October 23 away, before hosting the return fixture at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on October 28, 2025.
Among the standout names in the squad are the Chawinga sisters, Tabitha (Olympique Lyonnais Féminin, France) and Temwa (Kansas City Current, USA), whose presence injects both quality and inspiration into the team. They will lead a group that blends international class with local brilliance.
The team also includes goalkeepers Mercy Sikelo (Kukoma Ntopwa Queens), Yamikani Kaonga (MDF Lioness), Thoko Mwase (FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women) and Ireen Sibande (Silver Strikers Ladies).
In defence, Fazili has roped in Chimwemwe Madise (TP Mazembe), Shilla Mangani (Wanderers Queens), Maureen Kenneth, Maggie Chavula (Ascent Academy) and Doreen Dickson (MDF Lioness) among others all expected to provide solidity at the back.
The midfield department showcases the creative core of the team, featuring Leticia Chinyamula (Ascent), Zainab Kapanda (Bullets Women) and foreign-based playmaker Rose Kabzere (Montpellier Hérault SC, France), along with Vanessa Chipikula (Kazakhstan) and Faith Chimzimvu (Sweden).
Upfront, the Scorchers will count on the pace and precision of Asimenye Simwaka, Catherine Kachala and Sabino Thom with Zambia-based Chisomo Banda adding depth to the attacking lineup.
The squad’s composition highlights Malawi’s growing international footprint in women’s football a reflection of years of investment and development at grassroots level.
Clubs like Ascent Soccer Academy, MDF Lioness, Kukoma Ntopwa Queens and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women continue to dominate the supply line of national team talent.
With a calm but confident approach, Fazili believes this is the moment the Scorchers can finally make history.
“This team represents the new era of Malawian women’s football. We are not just going to participate; we are going to compete and qualify,”
Fazili emphasized.
