Government has commended the Faizan Global Relief Foundation (FGRF) for supporting over 15,000 vulnerable families with food assistance during the holy month of Ramadhan.
Speaking in Salima, Minister of Labour, Skills and Innovation Joel Chigona praised the foundation during a distribution exercise where 4,000 families received relief packs to help them break their fast.
Chigona said the recent dry spell has worsened food shortages across the country, especially in lakeshore areas, making it difficult for many families to observe fasting comfortably. He urged other organisations to emulate FGRF’s initiative, noting that government relief maize alone is not enough to address the hunger situation.
FGRF Director of Communications and Public Relations Ibrahim Omar said within the first week of Ramadhan, the organisation had already reached 15,000 families nationwide. Each household received maize flour, beans, rice, soya pieces and sugar.
Omar added that about K2 billion has been invested in the programme to complement government efforts following the declaration of a State of National Disaster. He said the initiative is guided by the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), encouraging believers to care for neighbours facing hunger.
The assistance has reached areas including Chikunda, Chiswe, Nsanje, Thyolo, Kanjedza, Zomba and Salima and distributions are expected to continue throughout the holy month of Ramadhan.
