United Transformation Movement (UTM) President Dr. Dalitso Kabambe has called on party supporters across the country to remain steadfast, united, and resilient despite his third-place finish in the September 16 presidential election.
In an exclusive interview with Sele Media Malawi, Kabambe extended his heartfelt gratitude to UTM members and campaigners for their unwavering dedication during the election period, highlighting the determination and energy that characterized their campaign.
“While the results may not have met our expectations, we must remember that democracy is a journey filled with challenges, setbacks, and lessons,” he said.
Kabambe, who garnered 211,413 votes—approximately 4.0% of the national vote—placed behind former President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and incumbent President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, who was declared the winner.
A Call for Unity and Vision Beyond Elections
The former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Governor emphasized that political transformation is never achieved overnight and called on party members to stay committed to the UTM’s founding principles: transformation, progress, and hope.
“We have a practical, transformative vision for this country—a vision that can change the landscape of our nation for the better,” Kabambe said.
He further warned of ongoing political challenges including opposition, misinformation, and internal division, stressing the need for internal cohesion and strategic focus.
“Let us be motivated by patriotism, by love for our country, and by the desire to see our nation thrive.”
Kabambe also cautioned against the politics of betrayal and sabotage, saying these tactics have historically derailed transformative efforts in Malawi. His remarks come amid reports of internal disagreements within opposition coalitions following the election loss.
Rejecting Hatred, Embracing Change
Reiterating UTM’s progressive values, Kabambe condemned the politics of hatred, vengeance, and tribalism, describing them as the root causes of national division and underdevelopment.
“Be the light in times of darkness, show kindness amidst bitterness, and embody the change we wish to see,” he urged.
Looking Ahead: UTM’s Next Chapter
Kabambe concluded with a powerful rallying call for renewed commitment among party members, asserting that the UTM’s vision remains alive and necessary for Malawi’s future.
“I am not going anywhere. We will keep moving forward together as the UTM family until we achieve complete transformation and give Malawians the Malawi they deserve,” he said.
Despite the setback, Kabambe’s leadership continues to attract attention, with UTM supporters expressing optimism that the party’s influence in Parliament and on local governance platforms will remain strong.
As Malawi navigates the post-election political terrain, Kabambe’s emphasis on unity over division and principles over power positions the UTM as a key player in shaping the country’s democratic future.
Dalitso Kabambe was appointed UTM President in 2024 following the death of former Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima.
His campaign focused heavily on economic reform, fiscal transparency, and youth empowerment.
