Political activist Bon Kalindo has strongly distanced himself from reports circulating across various media platforms linking him to the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) planned demonstrations aimed at forcing President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to implement campaign promises.
In the run-up to the general elections, President Mutharika assured Malawians that once elected on 16th September 2025, his government would introduce free secondary school education.
However, up to this day, secondary school students are still paying school fees, a development that has drawn public criticism.
The HRDC, which had gone silent for nearly six years while “eating honey and milk” under the administration of President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), has resurfaced, announcing plans to hold a series of protests against what it calls Mutharika’s unfulfilled promises.
Speaking through an audio clip, Kalindo advised the HRDC to remove his name from their list of participants, claiming that during the six years of MCP rule, he was arrested 12 times, yet the HRDC never condemned his arrests or spoke out against the government’s abuse of power.
Kalindo described the HRDC’s renewed activism against the DPP as “a threat to national security,” saying it was ironic that the same group which played a role in ousting Mutharika from power is now turning against him again.
He questioned the motive behind the planned protests, saying:
“For six years under President Chakwera, Malawians suffered in silence while the HRDC was clapping hands for the government, saying ‘Boma ndilomweli silikuchoka.’”
Kalindo emphasized that he was a man of principles who loves Malawi, adding that he has trusted partners he works with, including Comrade Lytone Mangochi, Bakili Muluzi TV, Pastor Moses Shumba, Comrade Ntanyiwa and Sylvester Namiwa, among others.
“I don’t work with fake activists and HRDC. I work with Malawi First. If it is to work with partners, please HRDC hands off,”
said Kalindo.
He further clarified that he would only take part in demonstrations if they concern the tragic death of Dr. Saulosi Klaus Chilima and the eight others who perished in the Chikangawa Forest crash but only if President Mutharika fails to institute credible investigations into the incident.
Kalindo has since advised all groups planning to protest against President Mutharika to be patient, saying:
“Even though he won the elections, there is no budget for him yet. His budget will come with the newly elected Members of Parliament.”
