Officials from the Malawi Mission in the Republic of South Africa, led by the Malawi High Commissioner to South Africa Stella Ndau, on Monday visited the site of the tragic Limpopo bus accident to assess the situation and the condition of Malawian nationals involved.
She was accompanied by South Africa’s Minister of Transport, Barbara Creecy, and the Ambassador of Zimbabwe, His Excellency David Hamadziripi.
The bus, which was carrying Malawian and Zimbabwean passengers from the Eastern Cape to Harare, reportedly lost control on a steep section of the road, rolled several times, and plunged into an embankment.
During the visit, the Malawi Mission team interacted with four (4) Malawian national one admitted to hospital and three (3) who had been discharged.
According to the South African Road Traffic Management Corporation, 42 people lost their lives while 52 others sustained injuries, including fractures, head trauma, and other serious conditions. Forty-one (41) victims are admitted to three separate hospitals in Louis Trichardt and Siloam, while 11 have since been discharged.
Of the deceased, 18 were women, 17 men, and seven (7) children, including a 10-month-old baby.
The Mission noted that it is currently difficult to establish the exact number of casualties by nationality, but this will be determined once identification and forensic analysis begin on Tuesday.
The Malawi Mission team said it will remain on the ground until all necessary processes are completed.
