Minister of Foreign Affairs George Chaponda and Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Joseph Mwanamvekha held a landmark meeting with Heads of Diplomatic Missions and representatives of international and multilateral organisations accredited to Malawi on Thursday afternoon.
The meeting, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters, aimed to deepen collaboration and strengthen international support for Malawi’s economic recovery and development agenda.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, discussions focused on areas requiring urgent cooperation to stabilize the economy and address the country’s pressing challenges.
Minister Mwanamvekha detailed the government’s comprehensive plan to revive the economy under the leadership of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.
He emphasized strategies to tackle the current economic downturn, restore investor confidence and promote sustainable growth across all sectors.
Food insecurity, which continues to affect millions of Malawians, was a major point of discussion during the engagement.
Minister Mwanamvekha outlined measures aimed at improving agricultural productivity and ensuring equitable food distribution nationwide.
The ongoing fuel shortages, which have disrupted transport and industry, were also addressed with plans to improve supply chains and reduce dependence on imports.
Energy security, including investment in renewable energy and better management of existing resources, was highlighted as a key government priority.
Fiscal measures to stabilize inflation, strengthen the national currency and improve revenue collection were discussed in detail.
The Minister reassured the diplomatic community of the government’s commitment to transparency and prudent management of public resources.
Members of the diplomatic corps welcomed the opportunity to engage directly with Malawi’s leadership on these critical issues.
They shared insights from their own countries, offering technical expertise and experiences that could support Malawi’s development agenda.
Several diplomats emphasized the importance of partnerships in trade, education, health and infrastructure to bolster national resilience.
Opportunities for capacity-building initiatives and technical assistance were also highlighted as areas for immediate collaboration.
Minister Chaponda thanked the international community for their continued support and encouraged ongoing dialogue to tackle emerging challenges.
He reiterated that strong partnerships are vital for Malawi to achieve inclusive growth and sustainable development.
