Former Malawi President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has demonstrated his continued support for the country’s war heroes by donating K5 million towards this year’s Poppy Week, an annual fundraising initiative aimed at uplifting the welfare of war veterans.
The donation was made at his Page House residence in Mangochi during the official launch of the 2025 Flag Week, a symbolic event that reminds Malawians of the sacrifices made by the country’s gallant soldiers during the World Wars.
Speaking during the ceremony, Mutharika emphasized the importance of remembering and supporting the men and women who risked their lives for the nation’s peace and freedom.
“It is important that we support our war veterans because they sacrificed a lot for this nation. For me, this is personal, because I remember how my uncle, who was a soldier, suffered from leprosy while serving in Tanzania,” said Mutharika.
He urged Malawians from all walks of life to contribute towards the cause, stressing that the veterans deserve dignified lives after dedicating their youth and energy to serve the country.
The former president also hinted at the need for continued reforms within the Malawi Defence Force, pledging that his administration, if given another chance, would review both the working and living conditions of active soldiers to ensure they are adequately rewarded.
The Poppy Week initiative remains one of Malawi’s oldest traditions in honouring military service, tracing its roots to the post World War era, symbolizing remembrance, unity, and gratitude to the nation’s heroes.
As Poppy Week activities roll out across the country, Mutharika’s gesture is expected to inspire more Malawians to come forward and support those who once stood on the frontline for national peace.
