President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has addressed concerns raised by various groups regarding perceived gender imbalance in his recent partial appointments to ministerial and other senior government positions.
Speaking on Wednesday afternoon during the swearing-in ceremony for newly appointed ministers and top government officials at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre, Mutharika acknowledged the criticism surrounding the lack of female representation in the new appointments.
“People are always quick to criticise APM.But I am always pleased when I see women occupying senior roles in various sectors. I would like to see women in leadership positions across the public and private sectors, as well as in NGOs,” he said.
The Malawi leader reiterated his administration’s commitment to gender equality.
He said:“Gender equality remains a priority. Women will be appointed to positions across all sectors. Our government will be inclusive and representative.”
Mutharika emphasised the need to empower women and ensure their full participation in national development at all levels.
The swearing-in ceremony was overseen by Richard Santhe, Director of Civil Litigation in the Ministry of Justice, who ensured that all legal protocols were duly followed.
Mutharika’s comments come amid increasing pressure from civil society organisations and other stakeholders for greater inclusion of women in leadership roles, highlighting ongoing discussions around gender equity and representation in Malawi’s public institutions.
