Malawi’s Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Hon. Joseph Mwanamvekha, MP, is in the United States attending the Spring Meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), where he is leading Malawi’s delegation in high-level discussions aimed at strengthening the country’s economic resilience and development partnerships.
Since the start of the week, Honourable Mwanamvekha has been holding a series of engagements with regional and international financial institutions and development partners. The talks have focused on Malawi’s immediate priorities, including food security, fertiliser supply, foreign exchange stability, fuel availability, and access to essential medicines.
On Wednesday, the Minister met with Mr. Adriano Ubisso, Executive Director of the World Bank, before proceeding to hold discussions with other international financial partners on short-term policy priorities, key development projects, and funding requirements.
The following day, Thursday, 16th October, Honourable Mwanamvekha chaired the 30th Statutory Meeting of the Constituency, and later met with officials from the World Bank Country Management Unit and the IMF Executive Director. The day concluded with his participation—alongside the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi—in the World Bank Group Development Committee Ministerial Lunch and Meeting, where they engaged with development partners on Malawi’s economic agenda.
On Friday, 17th October, the Minister and his delegation are scheduled to take part in the IMFC Breakfast, followed by a Ministerial Breakfast with the Zambian Minister of Finance. They will also meet the African Director at the IMF and the Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Treasury to discuss regional economic cooperation.
The day will wrap up with strategic engagements with the Rockefeller Foundation and Lazard International Advisory to explore new development financing and investment opportunities for Malawi.
The series of meetings will conclude on Saturday, 18th October, when Honourable Mwanamvekha and his delegation will meet the East and Southern African Regional Vice President of the World Bank Group to reinforce discussions on regional development priorities and continued support for Malawi’s economic reform programmes.
