
A total of 4,009,537 Malawians are projected to face food shortages during the 2025/2026 lean period (October to March), representing about 22 percent of the national population, according to the latest annual food security assessment conducted by the Ministry of Finance through the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC).
Meanwhile,Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha has indicated that, to safeguard livelihoods, the vulnerable population will require humanitarian food assistance estimated at 200,000 metric tonnes of maize, valued at approximately K387.20 billion.
Mwanamvekha explains that the food assistance will be required for a period ranging from three to six months during the lean season.
He has further expressed the government’s appreciation for the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders in responding to the looming food insecurity situation.
