The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has expressed deep concern over the recent political and security developments in the Republic of Madagascar. Reports of an attempted coup d’état have sent shockwaves across the region, raising fears over peace, stability and democratic governance.
In a statement, Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, expressed strong solidarity with the people of Madagascar during this challenging period.
“As the Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, I express profound solidarity with the people of Madagascar during this defining moment for the nation’s democratic future.”
SADC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Madagascar in restoring constitutional order, safeguarding democratic governance, and promoting peace in the region.
“SADC stands with the people of Madagascar. We are committed to safeguarding constitutional order and regional peace,” the statement read.
The regional bloc expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life, injuries and destruction of property resulting from recent demonstrations.
Condolences were extended to the families affected, noting that such violence undermines the shared values of peace, unity, and democracy in the region.
SADC has urged all stakeholders in Madagascar to remain calm and exercise maximum restraint. The community emphasized that national challenges must be addressed through inclusive dialogue, not force or coercion.
“All political actors are called upon to respect the rule of law and engage in peaceful and constructive dialogue,” the statement noted.
Law enforcement agencies were reminded to act with professionalism, impartiality and within international human rights standards, while citizens were encouraged to express their concerns lawfully and peacefully.
To facilitate a return to normalcy, SADC announced plans to dispatch the SADC Panel of Elders to Madagascar for a fact-finding and mediation mission. This delegation will help create a conducive environment for dialogue and reconciliation.
“We are ready to walk side by side with Madagascar toward peace, unity and a restored democratic order,” reads part of the SADC communiqué.
