Shankers Golfing Society has donated a prostate cancer scanning device worth K5 million to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe, a move set to enhance early diagnosis and treatment of the disease.
The donation comes after reports revealed that prostate cancer patients were being referred to other facilities for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests due to the lack of proper equipment at the referral hospital.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Shankers Golfing Society Captain, Gift Kawamba, said the group felt compelled to act after learning about the challenge.
“As Shankers, we were concerned that a referral hospital as big as Kamuzu Central Hospital didn’t have a machine to test for prostate cancer, forcing patients to seek services elsewhere,” Kawamba said.
He added that the society remains committed to supporting health initiatives that make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
Receiving the donation, KCH Director, Dr. Enock Ludzu, expressed gratitude and said the new equipment will significantly ease pressure on the hospital’s diagnostic services.
“Patients who needed this test were often told to get help elsewhere and return later with results. This equipment will make a big difference,” Dr. Ludzu said.
The gesture highlights how community-based groups continue to play a vital role in filling critical gaps within Malawi’s health sector, complementing government efforts to improve healthcare delivery.
