England-based Malawian striker Shaquille Gwenge continues to make headlines after scoring his 9th league goal of the season, keeping him at the top of the Southern League Premier South golden boot race.
The prolific forward was once again on target as Poole Town secured a vital 2-0 win over Dorchester Town on Tuesday evening.
Gwenge, who joined Poole Town during the summer transfer window, scored from the penalty spot in the 60th minute to seal victory against his former club.
Earlier, teammate Antonio Diaz had opened the scoring in the 20th minute of the first half, setting the tone for Poole Town’s impressive away performance.
The win pushed Poole Town to third position on the log with 24 points from 11 matches, just four points behind leaders Walton & Hersham.
Gwenge’s consistency in front of goal has been a major factor in his club’s strong start to the campaign, making him one of the most valuable players in the division.
So far, the 26-year-old striker has found the back of the net 12 times in all competitions, including cup matches, underlining his importance to the Dolphins since arriving at the club.
Gwenge’s journey is a story of hard work and steady progress. Before joining Poole Town, he played for Dorchester Town for three seasons, where he became a fan favorite and twice won the club’s Top Goal Scorer Award, scoring an impressive 40 goals in 102 appearances.
Speaking after the match, Poole Town coach praised Gwenge’s work ethic and leadership on the pitch, saying:
“Shaquille is not just a goal scorer; he’s a team player who motivates others. His hunger to win and his attitude in training have lifted the whole squad.”
The Malawian forward’s hot form has not gone unnoticed with reports suggesting that several clubs in higher divisions are already monitoring his progress.
If his current trajectory continues, Gwenge could soon write his name among the best African forwards making waves in English non-league football and possibly earn a move to a higher tier.
“I’m just focused on helping my team win games and improving every day.If goals keep coming, then that’s a bonus,”he said.
With nine league goals already, Shaquille Gwenge stands as a leading contender for the Golden Boot, proving that determination and discipline can turn dreams into reality even far from home.
