Stakeholders in sign language education have called for concerted efforts to bridge the communication gap that continues to marginalize people with hearing impairments.
Sign Language Inclusive for Development (SLID) Principal, Fatimah Hussein, made the appeal in Chiradzulu on Monday when SLID students donated assorted items worth about K900,000 to Maryview School for the Deaf.
The donation included soya pieces, cooking oil, exercise books, and pens.
During the visit, SLID students interacted with the learners, sharing experiences and laughter in a touching display of inclusion that helped boost the children’s confidence and sense of belonging.
Maryview School for the Deaf Head Teacher, Tadeyo Kazembe, commended the gesture and appealed for continued support to advance full inclusion for learners with hearing impairments.
In Malawi, the deaf population is estimated to be around 1to 2% of the total population, translating to roughly 200,000 to 300,000 people.
Many individuals with hearing impairments face significant barriers in education, employment, and access to public services due to limited awareness and lack of sign language interpreters.
