In a bold move to tackle youth unemployment and promote self-reliance, The SID, a local community organisation, has rolled out an ambitious life skills training programme targeting young people from Machinjiri Township in Blantyre. The training, scheduled for November 9, 2025, aims to equip over 200 participants with hands-on and entrepreneurial skills that can transform their livelihoods.
According to one of the organisation’s leaders, Ibrahim Yusuf, the initiative is part of The SID’s broader mission to nurture a generation of self-sufficient youths who can create their own employment opportunities instead of waiting for white-collar jobs.
“Our goal is to turn idle energy into productive action,” Yusuf explained. “Most of the young people in our townships are eager to work, but lack the technical know-how. That’s why we’ve made the programme highly accessible, charging only K3,500 to encourage wider participation.”
He added that upon successful completion, participants will receive officially recognised certificates, boosting their credibility as skilled workers in various trades.
“When people see a certificate from a reputable institution, they are more confident in hiring you. It builds trust between clients and artisans,” Yusuf said.
The training will span a variety of practical fields including soap production, phone and television repair, small-scale business management, and other income-generating activities designed to promote innovation and self-employment.
The official launch will feature Mr. Yunus San, Director of Y San Inspiration, as the guest of honour. His presence is expected to inspire participants to take the programme seriously and apply the skills learned to better their communities.
Yusuf noted that the initiative aligns with Malawi’s national development agenda, which emphasises empowering youths through skills development to fight unemployment and poverty.
He also urged community leaders and parents to support the programme, saying that empowering young people with relevant skills is a long-term investment in community stability and progress.
With over 200 young people expected to benefit, The SID’s training initiative could become a model for community-driven empowermen demonstrating that real change starts when local organisations take action from within their own neighbourhoods.
