BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-A three day Electronic Invoicing System (EIS) Awareness Workshop has successfully concluded in Blantyre, bringing together key stakeholders to enhance understanding and collaboration on Malawi’s evolving tax system. The meeting took place in Blantyre from April 14 to 16, 2026.
The workshop, organized by the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) in partnership with the Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) and various Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), aimed at equipping participants with knowledge and tools to support the rollout of the new system.
Representing the Concerned Citizens of Malawi People Power Movement were Chairpersons Edward Kambanje and Oliver Nakoma, who took part in the discussions and capacity building sessions throughout the three days.
Among the key objectives of the workshop was to introduce the Electronic Invoicing System (EIS), a new digital platform set to replace the current Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFDs) used by businesses in tax reporting.
Officials from MRA indicated that the EIS is expected to improve efficiency in tax administration, enhance transparency in business transactions and promote compliance among taxpayers across the country.
Participants also explored ways of strengthening partnerships between government institutions, civil society and the general public with emphasis on collaborative efforts in tax education and awareness campaigns.
The workshop further focused on building the capacity of CSOs, equipping them with knowledge to educate communities, raise awareness at district level and support citizens in understanding the ongoing tax reforms.
However, MRA acknowledged resistance from some members of the business community regarding the adoption of the new system. Stakeholders noted that this challenge could be addressed through increased awareness campaigns and continuous engagement with traders.
Participants emphasized the need for sustained dialogue among CSOs, traders and government institutions to ensure smooth implementation of the EIS and accurate dissemination of information.
Civil Society Organizations were also urged to take a leading role in promoting accountability by fully understanding the EIS, assessing its impact on citizens and advocating using research based evidence.
The meeting further highlighted the importance of transparency and oversight, with CSOs expected to monitor the implementation of the system and represent the concerns of the public effectively.
Speaking after the workshop, participants described the engagement as informative, empowering and timely, noting that it marks a significant step towards inclusive and transparent tax reforms in Malawi.
The Concerned Citizens of Malawi People Power Movement has since expressed commitment to supporting public awareness initiatives, promoting tax transparency and working closely with stakeholders to ensure successful implementation of the EIS.
The movement also extended appreciation to the leadership of HRCC for entrusting their representatives with participation in the important national engagement.
The EIS Awareness Workshop is seen as a milestone in fostering cooperation between government and civil society, with expectations that the knowledge gained will contribute to improved accountability and governance in Malawi’s tax system.
