President of the United Democratic Front (UDF), Atupele Muluzi, has strongly condemned acts of violence and what he described as undemocratic tendencies allegedly linked to the current Malawi Congress Party (MCP) administration, saying he will never remain silent in the face of injustice.
In a statement, Muluzi said he has always maintained a consistent position against violence and abuse of power regardless of which political party is in government.
“Whenever there is anything unjust, undemocratic, or violent, I will always speak out and condemn such acts without fear or favour,” said Muluzi.
The former cabinet minister said his condemnation of political violence did not begin today, recalling that he also publicly denounced violence during the 2024 political tensions and continues to do the same in 2025.
Muluzi further accused the current administration of allegedly allowing acts of violence against citizens and political opponents, warning that such behaviour threatens the country’s democratic foundations.
He stressed that democracy, freedom of speech, and freedom of assembly are sacred constitutional rights that must be protected at all costs in a democratic society.
According to Muluzi, leadership must always be exercised with restraint, tolerance, and respect for opposing views, saying political power should never be used to intimidate or silence citizens.
The UDF leader also reflected on his past experiences during the administration of late president Bingu wa Mutharika, saying he once stood with Malawians against the banning of political gatherings in 2012.
He said his involvement in protests against the restrictions led to his arrest and detention at Maula Prison, an experience he believes shaped his commitment to defending democratic principles.
“I have never believed in selective justice or selective condemnation,” Muluzi said, emphasizing that leaders must remain truthful and principled even when it is politically inconvenient.
He added that both leaders and ordinary citizens have a responsibility to protect democratic values consistently, regardless of who holds power.
Muluzi concluded by calling for peace, dialogue, mutual respect and adherence to the rule of law, saying Malawi belongs to all its citizens and must always be governed in a democratic and inclusive manner.
