A 21-year-old woman identified as Neliya Aufi has been hospitalised at Mangochi District Hospital after sustaining burns when a cooking gas cylinder exploded while she was preparing supper inside her house.
According to Mangochi Police spokesperson Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi,said the incident occurred on May 7, 2026, at Chomba Village in Traditional Authority Mponda, Mangochi District.
Daudi,added that the police findings indicate that the cylinder accidentally exploded during the cooking process, resulting in burns to both of the victim’s arms and part of her face.
The fire also damaged part of the house, mainly the kitchen, together with several kitchen utensils.
Aufi was rushed to Mangochi District Hospital, where she is currently receiving medical treatment.
Meanwhile, the value of the damaged property and the actual cause of the explosion are yet to be established.
Police in the district are advising members of the public who use cooking gas cylinders to regularly inspect their gas equipment before use, and consult technicians on any defects they may observe.
The victim hails from Vinjenje Village, Traditional Authority Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota District.
