A learner living with a disability at Mufti Abbas Primary School in Mangochi, Alfred Bwanali, has received a life-changing boost after being presented with a wheelchair and assorted learning materials worth MK857,000 from teachers under the “Teachers of Mangochi” WhatsApp group.
The support was handed over on Friday at the school in Boma Zone, easing the mobility and learning challenges the young learner had been facing and restoring hope for his education journey.
The donation included a wheelchair, two bags of maize, 50 exercise books, mathematical instruments, a school uniform and other essential learning materials, all sourced through contributions from teachers and well-wishers.
Coordinator of the initiative under the Teachers of Mangochi WhatsApp group, Mussa Kabichi, said members were moved by Alfred’s situation and quickly mobilised support to improve his access to education.
“We saw the challenges Alfred was going through and felt duty-bound as teachers to help improve his learning environment and mobility. The response from members and well-wishers was encouraging and demonstrated unity and compassion among teachers in Mangochi,” said Kabichi.
Headteacher of Mufti Abbas Primary School, Omar Kaunda, described the intervention as timely, saying it will have a positive impact on the learner’s academic performance and daily school life.
He added that the support reflects the importance of inclusive education and community involvement in supporting vulnerable learners.
Alfred’s mother, Lydia Laysan, expressed gratitude to the teachers and all contributors, saying the donation had significantly reduced the family’s burden.
She said the wheelchair would greatly improve Alfred’s mobility, allowing him to attend school more comfortably and focus on his studies.
The Teachers of Mangochi group, established in 2018 by Makumba Primary School headteacher Jonas Maleka, has grown to over 1,000 members and continues to mobilise support for learners with disabilities and bereaved teachers’ families across the district.
