The Southern Region Netball Committee (Soreneco) has received a significant financial boost after long-term sponsor Botsalt increased its sponsorship package for the Southern Region Under-23 Netball League from K18.83 million to K25.85 million, marking one of the biggest investments in regional women’s sports development in Malawi in recent years.
The revised sponsorship package, unveiled during an official ceremony attended by netball administrators, sports officials, and stakeholders, is expected to strengthen competition standards, improve player development, and enhance the operational capacity of clubs participating in the league.
The sponsorship increase comes at a time when Malawi’s netball sector continues to gain regional and international recognition, with stakeholders emphasizing the importance of sustained grassroots investment in nurturing future national team stars.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, Soreneco Chairperson Olivia Msungama described the sponsorship increment as a transformative development for netball in the Southern Region, saying the additional financial support would directly contribute to raising the quality and competitiveness of the league.
Msungama commended Botsalt for maintaining its long-standing commitment to youth netball development, noting that consistent sponsorship has helped sustain the Under-23 competition over the years despite economic challenges affecting sports administration in Malawi.
“The sponsorship increase is a major boost to the competitiveness of our league and we appreciate this consideration. We know the standards of the league will improve,” Msungama said.
She further stated that the enhanced package would assist clubs in addressing logistical challenges such as transportation, equipment procurement, officiating costs, and player welfare, all of which remain key barriers to growth in community and regional sports structures.
According to Soreneco officials, the Under-23 League has increasingly become an important talent identification platform for young female athletes aspiring to break into elite netball structures, including the national team setup.
Over the past several years, Malawi’s netball system has relied heavily on regional leagues to nurture talent capable of competing at national and international levels. Sports analysts say investments in youth-focused competitions are critical to maintaining the country’s competitive edge in African netball.
Malawi remains one of Africa’s strongest netball nations, with the national team consistently competing at high-profile international tournaments, including the Netball World Cup and continental championships. Experts believe sustained sponsorships at grassroots and regional levels are essential to ensuring continuity in talent production.
Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) General Secretary Yamikani Khungwa-Kauma welcomed the sponsorship increment, describing it as an encouraging signal for women’s sports development in the country.
Khunghwa-Kauma praised Botsalt for demonstrating corporate confidence in women’s athletics at a time when many sporting disciplines continue to struggle with inadequate financing.
He emphasized that long-term sponsorship commitments are instrumental in ensuring consistency, stability, and professionalism within local sports leagues.
“This development shows that there are corporate entities willing to invest in women’s sports and youth development. Such support helps improve structures and creates opportunities for young athletes to grow competitively,” Khungwa-Kauma said during the ceremony.
The Malawi National Council of Sports also applauded the increased investment, with representative Jessy Ganizani describing the sponsorship as a positive contribution toward strengthening Malawi’s sports ecosystem.
Ganizani noted that private sector partnerships remain crucial in complementing government efforts to develop sports infrastructure, talent pathways, and organized competitions across the country.
She urged other corporate organizations to emulate Botsalt’s commitment by investing in grassroots sports initiatives that directly impact communities and empower young people, particularly girls.
Sports development experts have repeatedly argued that women’s sports in Malawi continue to face systemic funding disparities compared to men’s competitions. However, sponsorships such as the Botsalt partnership are increasingly being viewed as important interventions capable of narrowing that gap.
Botsalt has sponsored the Southern Region Under-23 League continuously for the past seven years, establishing itself as one of the most consistent supporters of regional netball in Malawi.
The company’s long-term involvement has helped stabilize the competition while also providing a platform for emerging players to gain exposure and competitive experience.
Observers within the sports sector say continuity in sponsorship is often more impactful than short-term financial injections because it allows leagues to plan effectively, strengthen administration, and develop sustainable systems.
The increased package is also expected to improve the visibility of the league, potentially attracting more spectators, media attention, and additional commercial partners interested in supporting women’s sports.
According to organizers, preparations for the upcoming season are already underway, with the new campaign expected to begin next month.
Teams participating in the competition are reportedly intensifying training ahead of the season opener as they prepare for what officials anticipate will be one of the most competitive editions of the league in recent years.
The Under-23 competition has become particularly important in bridging the developmental gap between school-level netball and elite national competition.
Many young athletes who previously lacked structured pathways into professional or elite netball have benefited from the league, with several players eventually earning opportunities to feature in higher-tier competitions and national selection programs.
Sports administrators believe that strengthening youth leagues can also contribute to broader social outcomes, including youth empowerment, gender inclusion, and community engagement.
In Malawi, netball remains one of the most popular sports among women and girls, particularly in urban and semi-urban communities where local leagues provide recreational and professional opportunities for young athletes.
However, despite the sport’s popularity, many clubs continue to operate under financial constraints, often struggling to meet basic operational costs.
The sponsorship increase from Botsalt is therefore expected to ease some of these challenges while encouraging more structured management within participating clubs.
Analysts also say corporate investment in women’s sports can produce wider economic and branding benefits for companies by strengthening community relations and supporting social development initiatives.
Globally, women’s sports have experienced rising commercial interest over the past decade, with increased sponsorships, media rights agreements, and audience growth reshaping the sporting landscape.
In Africa, however, funding disparities continue to affect the development of many women’s leagues, making sustained local sponsorships particularly important.
Within Malawi’s sports landscape, the Botsalt-Soreneco partnership is increasingly being recognized as a model for successful collaboration between private companies and sports institutions.
Stakeholders believe the partnership demonstrates how strategic investment in grassroots sports can contribute to national talent development while also enhancing community participation.
The sponsorship unveiling ceremony also highlighted the growing importance of structured youth competitions in building long-term sporting success.
Officials at the event stressed that developing athletes at an early stage remains critical to ensuring Malawi retains its standing as a respected netball nation on the international stage.
Several sports administrators attending the function expressed optimism that the increased sponsorship would motivate clubs and players to raise their performance levels throughout the upcoming season.
They further emphasized the need for improved coaching standards, officiating quality, and athlete welfare to match the growing investment entering the competition.
Meanwhile, netball supporters across the Southern Region have welcomed the announcement, expressing hope that the financial boost will translate into better-organized matches, improved facilities, and enhanced opportunities for young female players.
For many aspiring athletes, the Under-23 League represents more than just competition; it serves as a stepping stone toward national recognition and professional sporting opportunities.
As Malawi continues working toward strengthening women’s participation in sports, stakeholders say partnerships like the one between Botsalt and Soreneco could play a decisive role in shaping the future of the game.
With the new season scheduled to commence next month, expectations are already rising among teams, supporters, and sports administrators eager to witness the impact of the expanded sponsorship package on the quality and intensity of competition.
The sponsorship increase not only reflects growing confidence in the league but also underscores the broader importance of investing in youth and women’s sports development across Malawi.
For Soreneco and participating clubs, the enhanced funding arrives at a critical moment when demand for structured sporting opportunities among young women continues to rise.
As preparations intensify ahead of kickoff, the coming season is expected to test the strength, talent, and ambition of Southern Region netball while showcasing the transformative impact of sustained corporate support in Malawian sports.
