President of the United Democratic Front (UDF), Atupele Muluzi, has moved to clarify remarks he made during last year’s campaign about President Arthur Peter Mutharika, saying the comments were never meant to insult or attack the veteran leader.
In a statement released amid continued public discussion surrounding his earlier remarks that “it is time for him to rest,” Muluzi said his words have been misunderstood by some sections of the public.
He stressed that he fully respects the democratic decision Malawians made in electing Mutharika as President at the age of 85, saying such a choice deserves recognition and respect at all times.
According to Muluzi, his comments were made against the backdrop of the enormous pressures and responsibilities attached to the Presidency, particularly during periods of economic hardship and national challenges.
The UDF leader explained that his intention was to raise concerns about governance, leadership transition and the importance of preparing younger generations to take up leadership responsibilities in the country.
Muluzi further said his remarks should not be interpreted as disrespect toward elderly leaders or an attempt to downplay Mutharika’s contribution to Malawi’s development.
He described the President as an important national figure whose experience and service to the country remain worthy of recognition and appreciation.
At the same time, Muluzi emphasized the need for strong institutions and effective delegation of responsibilities within government, saying Malawi performs better when leadership duties are shared across constitutional offices.
He specifically highlighted the importance of fully utilizing the office of Vice President, mentioning Jane Ansah as part of broader efforts to strengthen governance and public service delivery.
The former minister also called for mature and respectful political discourse, saying differences in political opinion should never be mistaken for personal hatred or hostility.
“We can debate ideas while still respecting one another and remaining united by our love for Malawi,” reads part of the statement.
Muluzi concluded his message with a call for unity and patriotism, ending with the words.
