Assistant coach for Mighty Wanderers, Macdonald Mtetemera, has defended his players following Sunday’s 2-1 loss to rivals FCB Nyasa Big Bullets in an FDH Bank Premiership clash played at Bingu National Stadium.
Speaking after the match, Mtetemera said it would be unfair to accuse the Wanderers players of lacking commitment simply because they lost the heated encounter.
Bullets took the lead through Blessings Mpokera, who converted from the penalty spot, before Maxwell Gasten Phodo added a second goal for the defending champions. Wanderers pulled one back through Promise Kamwendo, also from a penalty, but failed to find an equaliser.
Despite the defeat, Mtetemera insisted his side performed well and created enough chances to get something from the game.
The coach pointed to missed opportunities as the major difference, revealing that his players struck the woodwork several times during the contest.
According to Mtetemera, the performance showed positive signs even though the result did not go in their favour.
He added that the technical panel has already identified areas that need improvement ahead of the upcoming fixtures as Wanderers continue their mission of defending the league title.
The defeat leaves Wanderers in fourth position on the FDH Bank Premiership table with three points from two matches.
Meanwhile, Bullets have moved to the top of the standings with seven points collected from three games, strengthening their early title ambitions.
